SPECIFICATION
Following the lead of the car market exploration of all aspects of efficiency to extend range, resulting in the new generation of electric and hybrid cars 30% more efficient than cars produced just 5 years ago.
The motorcycle industry can look beyond the limitations of current battery technology and embrace complimentary and consistent solutions to transition to net zero.
The aerodynamic efficiency gain can be used to extend range or lower costs, reducing the need for a larger battery, which in turn cuts down on weight, charge time, and battery expenses. The duct is affordable to integrate and manufacture, with its range benefits remaining consistent over time. It enables increased top speed (max), top speed (sustained) and acceleration with a very low risk of component failure, and its advantages increase with higher-speed riding, unlike batteries, which tend to lose efficiency under such conditions.
AERODYNAMICS
INCREASING RANGE: Following the same computer fluids dynamics (CFD) development programme as a Formula 1 car. The WMCSRS incorporates aerodynamic front fenders that force air towards the bespoke V-Duct, which reduces drag by pushing air through the vehicle, rather than around it. This reduces frontal resistance and ensures less energy is used to propel the vehicle forward.
PERFORMANCE
The incorporation of our duct is to enhance efficiency and this is not limited to increasing range. Aerodynamic efficiency has an impact upon top speed max, and importantly in electric top speed sustained. The low failure risk components add very little weight, and its advantages increase with higher-speed riding, unlike batteries, which tend to lose efficiency under such conditions.
EXSISTING ARCHITECTURE
The ZERO SR/S is one of very few publicly available sports motorcycles where its possible to retro engineer a substantial duct. Within this application the duct achieves 10% aerodynamic drag reduction even when navigating the motorcycles existing architecture. Enhancing our understanding of methods, and possible designs, that we could implement to enhance future motorcycle specifications.
FUTURE POSSIBILITIES
Our aim is for the duct to become a specified sub-system within all future motorcycles. For the duct to provide the maximum benefit it must be considered at the beginning of the design process. It is difficult to achieve current required specifications for motorcycle battery packs, adding the duct presents a potential bridge to close this “gap”.
