DESIGN

MAINTAINING OUR “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION” PHILOSOPHY.

ALL ASPECTS OF THE MOTORCYCLE HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED TO PRODUCE THE WORLDS FIRST INTELLIGENT AERO ELECTRIC SPORTS MOTORCYCLE

It’s our desire to see the duct become a part of all future motorcycle design and the WMCSRS represents the strongest demonstration yet of the benefits of incorporating the technology.

Motorcycle’s have incredibly high packaging density, but for us to the transition to electric powertrains presents an opportunity to package a motorcycle differently, aggregating all of the voids to allow the air to flow through a motorcycle.  In creating the final design for the duct within the WMCSRS, 39 different designs were explored digitally, expanding our knowledge and understanding of how to deliver an optimised duct.

    BIFURCATED DUCT

The bifurcated duct design was first explored in the WMC300E+, providing a significant packaging benefit without compromising performance.  This design knowledge was utilised within this application and enhanced with the development of a helical duct to respect existing packaging constraints.  Throughout out the design process the team are looking to push the boundaries of what is possible, increasing the potential benefit in the future.

    ITERATIVE PROCESS

Incorporating WMC’s patented V-Duct into an existing motorcycle to provide a significant performance gain is a challenging packaging exercise.  However, leaning heavily on our expertise gained through previous projects the WMCSRS bifurcated helical spiral duct was created following exploration of 39 potential combinations, all digitally explored, to produce the optimised design.

    AERODYNAMICS FIRST

WMC have always known that the transition to electric presents the opportunity to package a motorcycle differently but acknowledges that this requires input from the beginning of the design process. Within the WMCSRS the 10% aerodynamic gain has been achieved despite having to navigate existing motorcycle architecture.

    COMPLEMENTARY TECHNOLOGY BLEND

A performance “gap” still remains between electric and petrol motorcycles.  Whilst the trajectory of battery technology developments is steep, they are still not close to fully closing the “gap”.  We see a complimentary technology approach as the answer in the short term, combining efficiency benefits to achieve greater parity now, but also greater performance in the future.
